Questions to Stimulate Book Club Discussions

Questions:

  • Are you familiar with Greek mythology?  What did you already know about the events in this book, and what was new?
  • Did you smile at any parts of the story?  Do you have a favorite scene?
  • Which character (besides Andromache) did you like the best?  Which character did you dislike the most?
  • If you had a chance to ask one of the characters a question, what would it be?
  • The story takes place around 550 BC when women were viewed as property. Andromache is very forward for a woman of her time.
What do you think of Andromache?
Why do you think she became so outspoken?
In what ways does she grow or change during the novel?
  • Andromache has everything going for her before Helen arrives. If it hadn’t been the King’s request, do you think she would have befriended her?
  • In what ways did Helen change Andromache’s life?
  • Helen and Paris are both extremely self-centered.
  • Do you think they change during the book?
  • What caused the change?
  • Paris is not a fighter, yet as part of the royal family, he is thrust into a leadership role.  What did you think of his marching style?  Does this Remind you of anything? (was it a bit of comic relief?)
  • Andromache tries to dissuade Hector from going to battle with  Achilles.  Is there any way she could have convinced him not to go?
  • When Hector doesn’t say “not today” before he heads out, did you feel dread?
  • What did you think about Hector’s conversation with Achilles?
  • If a story must have a villain, who is the villain of this story? Helen, Paris, Agamemnon, (the brother) or the Goddesses and the apple?
  • What did you think of Troy before the war?
  • Wars are often lost due to egos and miscalculations.  Which mistakes do you think led to the fall of Troy?
  • Did you take anything away from this book that is relevant to our world/society today?
  • If this story was set in modern times  … how might it turned out differently?
  • If this book was a movie, who would you like to see in the main roles?

I love talking with book clubs - either in person or via zoom.
